"....There's a promise in the journeys of the mind,
You begin to believe that there are miracles you will find,
And that someday you'll remember who you are.
The seed within a bright and shining star,
It's like a flame that lives within a hungering heart,
That only awaits the gift of love for it to spark,
Into a fire that burns forever, endlessly...."

1990- Earth Day performance
Archival video from Earth Day 1990. This is a window into the day, with the speaker preceding John Denver in a snip of his call to action speech, before John is introduced by Olivia Newton-John and sings Rocky Mountain High; followed by a short speech, and then sings the first verse of The Flower That Shattered the Stone before the host interrupts; but the video returns to show John concluding the song and exiting the stage.
This was John’s inspiring speech:
“Thank you very much, and once again, Happy Earth Day. Buckminster Fuller, who was a dear friend of mine, and the grandfather of the future in many of our opinions, said that the major challenge that faces the human race today is a metaphysical one. That is to educate the people to the degree that spontaneous behaviors spring forth. Behaviors which will ensure the survival of our species. Today people all over the world are gathered together, people who have heard that voice and who have begun that education and are willing to now take the second step, which is to translate our knowledge into action.
We see a world of clean air to breathe, and clean water to drink. We see a world without hunger and homelessness. We see a world without nuclear weapons. A world in which all people are working together to create a sustainable future and a healthy environment.
Listen to these words, written as an anthem to the Earth, by my friend Joe Henry and a fellow named Jon Jarvis, called The Flower That Shattered the Stone.”
