John became float plane certified under Kitty Banner's instruction in Talkeetna, Alaska in 1985. For more info about this from Kitty's perspective, her autobiography "Wings of Her Dreams" is a good resource as well as learning about the breadth of her career as an Alaskan bush pilot.
You may be aware that John's environmental concerns extended worldwide, and in particular to Alaska, where he enjoyed time away and fishing. These photos focus on his trip in 1985 as he became float plane certified in Talkeetna, Alaska. Away from studying, and practicing water landings, there were times for fishing, which was a passionate activity for John, as well as singing. See next post for video of the float plane experience.
